Illustrator CS2 has powerful feature called “Blend Tool”, and I’ve used it.

For beginning, let’s create some vector object, for example star.

We will put a circle inside it. Then we will select both object, choose Blend Tool and click at the circle and star vertex. As a result we will get something like following, depending on previous settings:

Will change settings to following values:

When objects are large, we need more steps. Now we can change outline color, opacity to get more satisfactory results. Let’s expiriment! Here is several examples of what I got using Blend Tool:
